K.T. Hammond, former Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa, has filed a defamation lawsuit against popular broadcaster Captain Smart over comments made during a broadcast on Onua TV.

The lawsuit stems from allegations that Hammond made tribalistic remarks questioning how an individual of Ewe descent could win the parliamentary seat in Adansi Asokwa, located in the Ashanti Region ¹.

According to Hammond, Captain Smart and his co-host attributed the following remarks to him during a broadcast on December 9, 2024: “He said, he said: ah! How can an Ewe person unseat me? Eh, eh? He said: why would an Ewe person be the one to take the seat from me in an Ashanti township?”

Hon Hammond argued that these words portray him as a tribalistic and close-minded individual incapable of accepting the victory of a Ghanaian of Ewe descent in the Ashanti Region.

Hammond, who contested on the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) ticket, lost his seat to Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi Dorani of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the December 7, 2024, Presidential and Parliamentary election.

In his suit, he asserted that the publication and subsequent republication of the alleged comments have caused significant harm to his reputation, subjected him to public ridicule, and inflicted severe emotional distress.

Hammond is therefore seeking several reliefs including Special, aggravated, and exemplary damages for libel published by Captain Smart and republished by local and international media.

He further sought Injunction to restrain Captain Smart and his agents from further publishing or causing defamatory words to be published.

The former MP demands an apology and retraction order directing Captain Smart to publish a suitable apology and retract the defamatory words.
He wants the Court for an order directing Captain Smart to remove defamatory videos and re-publications from the internet.
The former MP want order of costs involved in the prosecution of the suit and any other relief(s) the court may deem fit to grant.
