A former Council of State member, Nii Adjei Annan, has joined voice of traditional leaders within Tema and Ashaiaman to call on President John Mahama to consider appointing Kwesi Darko Asare, as Managing Director of the Tema Development Corporation (TDC).

According to him, the TDC needs someone with a deep understanding of the original planning and development of Tema.

“Kwasi Darko Asare has the character, capacity, and ability to relate to the people of the area. He is the right person to lead TDC and bring the necessary changes,” he said.

Nii Adjei Annan further lamented the current state of Tema, blaming the mismanagement of the TDC due to political interference, which has resulted in a breakdown of the city’s original planning. He stressed that political interests have undermined the mandate of TDC, and it is now time for a leader who understands the history and vision behind the city’s development to take charge.

On their part, the Traditional leaders in Tema and Ashaiman also called on President Mahama to appoint a new Managing Director for the Tema Development Corporation to address the ongoing developmental challenges and improve the planning of the area, which includes Ashaiman, Nungua, Kpone, and surrounding communities.

Speaking to journalists in Tema, the traditional authorities highlighted persistent issues stemming from the politicization of development, which they believe has hindered progress in the area. They expressed concern over the deteriorating state of both Tema and the TDC and stressed the urgent need for reform.

The elders of the community have recommended Kwasi Darko Asare, a seasoned economist and former Director of Estates at TDC, as the ideal candidate to lead the organization. Ashaiman Regent Nii Annan Adzor was particularly vocal in his support for Mr. Asare, stating that he has known him for many years and believes that Asare’s deep understanding of the local dynamics and development challenges makes him the right person for the job.

“I have known Kwasi Darko Asare for a long time, and I can say with confidence that he is well-suited to handle the complexities of the TDC. His background as a LAMD economist and his experience as director of estates give him a clear understanding of the area’s needs. I strongly urge President Mahama to appoint him as Managing Director, and the traditional leaders in this catchment area will fully support him,” said Nii Annan Adzor.

The Chief of Ashaiman, a member of the traditional council, also expressed his confidence in Mr. Asare, describing him as intelligent, professional, and someone who would effectively engage with the traditional authorities of the area. “He has proven his competence and professionalism during his time at TDC, and we believe he will work well with us,” he remarked.

The Nii Shipi of the Tema Traditional Council, Nii Shomponu II, also backed the call for Mr. Asare’s appointment, stating that he would personally welcome the decision and support him in his efforts. “Kwasi Darko Asare is a man of integrity, and I am confident he will restore the needed development and order to Tema,” he added.

The traditional leaders also requested that the President consider appointing an indigene as the mayor to help ensure that Tema’s development aligns with the needs of its residents.

The call for Kwasi Darko Asare to lead the TDC has gained widespread support from the traditional authorities, who are hopeful that his appointment will lead to meaningful improvements in the planning and development of Tema and its surrounding areas.
