Ghana’s Parliament, once a revered institution symbolizing democracy and the rule of law, has increasingly become a theater of chaos, thanks to the uncouth behavior of a vocal minority.

The recent conduct of some Members of Parliament (MPs) from the minority side has not only tarnished the dignity of the House but has also diverted attention from the pressing issues of national development. It is high time the majority rises above the fray, ignores these distractions, and focuses on the critical task of nation-building.

The minority’s penchant for turning parliamentary sessions into spectacles of disorder is nothing short of disgraceful. From shouting matches to physical altercations, their behavior has repeatedly crossed the line of decorum. The recent incident, where some minority MPs resorted to heckling and name-calling during a crucial debate on national policy, is a stark reminder of how low they are willing to stoop. Such actions are not only unbecoming of elected representatives but also a slap in the face of the Ghanaian people who entrusted them with the responsibility of governance.

The minority’s antics are not just a breach of parliamentary etiquette; they are a deliberate attempt to derail the legislative process. By creating unnecessary disruptions, they seek to frustrate the majority’s efforts to pass laws and policies aimed at improving the lives of Ghanaians. This obstructionist approach is a disservice to the nation, as it delays progress and undermines the very essence of democracy.

It is particularly disheartening to see the minority resort to such tactics when the country is grappling with numerous challenges. From economic recovery post-COVID-19 to addressing unemployment and improving healthcare, there is no shortage of issues that require urgent attention. Yet, instead of contributing constructively to the discourse, the minority chooses to engage in petty squabbles and grandstanding. Their behavior is a clear indication that they are more interested in scoring political points than in serving the people who elected them.

The majority, however, must not allow themselves to be drawn into this quagmire of chaos. They must remain steadfast in their commitment to nation-building and resist the temptation to engage in the minority’s theatrics. The majority has a mandate to govern, and they must do so with the seriousness and dedication that the task demands. This means staying focused on the legislative agenda, working collaboratively with stakeholders, and ensuring that the needs of the people are prioritized above all else.

Moreover, the majority must lead by example. They must demonstrate that it is possible to engage in robust debate without resorting to uncivil behavior. By maintaining a high standard of conduct, they can set a precedent for future parliamentary sessions and restore the dignity of the House. The majority must also hold the minority accountable for their actions, using the rules and procedures of Parliament to ensure that order is maintained and that the business of the House is conducted efficiently.

To the minority, we say this: your behavior is an embarrassment to the nation. It is time to grow up and act like the leaders you claim to be. The people of Ghana did not elect you to engage in childish antics; they elected you to represent their interests and contribute to the development of the country. If you cannot do that, then step aside and let those who are willing to work for the common good take your place.

In conclusion, the uncouth behavior of the minority in Ghana’s Parliament is a distraction that the nation can ill afford. The majority must rise above these distractions and remain focused on the task of nation-building. The challenges facing Ghana are too great to be sidelined by petty politics. It is time for all MPs, regardless of their political affiliation, to put the interests of the nation first and work together to build a better future for all Ghanaians. Anything less is a betrayal of the trust placed in them by the people.
