Govt Committed to Universal Water Access -Minister assures
Minister for Works, Housing, and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring universal access to potable water in Ghana.
During a working visit to the Ghana Water Limited (GWL) Head Office in Accra, Adjei commended GWL for its efforts in expanding urban water supply and improving service delivery.
The Minister emphasized that access to clean water is a fundamental right and pledged to work closely with stakeholders to improve infrastructure, address operational challenges, and enhance service delivery. He noted that water sector development remains a priority for the government, with funding for infrastructure projects aimed at expanding water supply networks across the country being key.
GWL’s Managing Director, Adam Mutawakilu, outlined the company’s governance framework and structures, which include multiple divisions such as Water Treatment and Quality Management, Finance and Accounting, and Regional Operations.
GWL currently oversees 92 water systems, serving an estimated 17 million people.
To address challenges such as Non-Revenue Water (NRW) losses and infrastructure rehabilitation, GWL is implementing initiatives like upgrading metering systems, reducing billing errors, and using technology to detect and fix leaks.
The company aims to reduce NRW by one to two percent annually.
The government has demonstrated its commitment to universal water access through initiatives like the Presidential Compact on Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene, signed by President Akufo-Addo in August 2024 ¹.
The compact aims to allocate an estimated $1.7 billion annually to water, sanitation, and hygiene initiatives until 2030.
