MP Calls for Urgent Investigation into Destruction of Ejura Police Station
The Member of Parliament for Ejura-Sekyeredumase, Mohammed Bawah Braimah, has called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Ghana Police Service to intensify their investigation into the recent unrest that led to the destruction of the Ejura Police Station.
In a statement delivered on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, February 13, 2025, the MP condemned the violence that erupted following the death of Misbawu Shaibu, a young man who died while in police custody. He called for accountability and for further actions to prevent such incidents in the future.
“I would like to express my deepest condolences to the family of the late Misbawu Shaibu. I also take this opportunity to appeal to the youth of Ejura to remain calm and allow due process to take its course. While I strongly condemn the violent destruction of the Ejura Police Station, I urge all stakeholders to address this matter with the seriousness it deserves,” Bawah Braimah
The destruction occurred on January 11, 2025, when a group of youth set the Ejura Police Station on fire in response to the death of Misbawu Shaibu, who had been in police custody.
Mr. Braimah emphasized the historical significance of the Ejura Police Station, which has served the community for decades and was built before Ghana’s independence. He stressed that the destruction of the station not only harmed law enforcement but also affected the entire community of Ejura.
According to the MP, the unrest started after Misbawu Shaibu, who had been arrested for allegedly buying a stolen phone, fell ill while in custody.
Despite his condition worsening, he was taken to the Ejura Government Hospital, where he passed away. The police subsequently moved his body to Mampong in the early hours of January 11, without informing his family. The news of his death sparked outrage among local residents, with rumours of police brutality spreading quickly.
As the situation escalated, the MP contacted local officials and requested reinforcements, but by the time help arrived, the police station had been set ablaze by the youth.
Mr. Braimah criticized the police for their inadequate response, claiming that better handling of the situation could have prevented the violence. He also noted that the evacuation of inmates, documents, and firearms from the station indicated that the police were aware of the potential for violence but failed to take effective preventive measures.
He therefore called for a thorough investigation into the incident by the IGP to determine the circumstances leading to the tragedy and hold those responsible accountable. He also urged the incoming Interior Minister to prioritize rebuilding the Ejura Police Station and to increase the number of police personnel in the area to enhance law enforcement.
“I remain committed to supporting efforts to restore peace and strengthen law enforcement in our community. May the soul of Misbawu Shaibu rest in peace,” Mr. Braimah concluded.
The MP’s statement comes as the community continues to grapple with the aftermath of the violence, with ongoing calls for justice and accountability.
