The Member of Parliament for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson, has urged fellow lawmakers to expedite the process of passing the Dual Citizenship Amendment Bill. This bill, he explained, seeks to remove current restrictions on dual citizenship and promote a more inclusive governance framework in Ghana.

In his statement on the floor of Parliament, delivered during this year’s Black History Month celebrations, Mr. Quayson emphasized that the push for dual citizenship was not a personal matter but a national issue. He argued that it is essential for Ghana’s democratic processes to evolve and recognize the significant contributions of Ghanaians in the diaspora.

“Our Constitution, while a beacon of democracy, must adapt to the global realities of our people,” he stated. “How can we marginalize those who have sought better opportunities abroad yet remain deeply connected to Ghana? How can we exclude them from leadership when their hearts, skills, and resources are dedicated to building our nation?”

Mr. Quayson further highlighted that in recent years, Ghana has become a symbol of hope and opportunity for many Africans, diasporans, and other nationals who have chosen to make the country their home. He noted that granting citizenship to these individuals would recognize their substantial economic contributions to Ghanaian society.

“I stand here not as a victim of political challenges but as a testament to the resilience of every Ghanaian who believes in the power of democracy and justice,” he remarked, expressing gratitude to the people of Assin North for once again entrusting him with the responsibility of representation.

The MP also used the occasion of Black History Month to reflect on the perseverance of Black people in overcoming slavery, institutional racism, and the ongoing fight for equality. He paid tribute to influential Black leaders such as Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr., Thomas Sankara, Patrice Lumumba, and Barack Obama, whose legacies have shaped history and inspired progress, particularly in political leadership.

Mr. Quayson concluded by stating that the contributions of the global diaspora, combined with their commitment to Ghana, would further strengthen the nation’s democracy and accelerate its development
