The Member of Parliament for Berekum West, Dickson Kyere-Duah has called on Parliament and stakeholders in Ghana’s sports sector to take decisive action against violence and hooliganism in sports.

Kyere-Duah plea comes after recalling the tragic incident at the Accra Sports Stadium on May 9, 2001, which resulted in 127 deaths.

He emphasized the need for proactive measures to prevent similar tragedies, highlighting incidents of violence against match officials, including the assault on renowned female referee Madam Theresa.

Several MPs contributed to the discussion, condemning violence in sports, particularly football.

Some key recommendations include a thorough risk assessments to ensure that before games.

The MPs also recommended regulating alcohol sales near stadiums to prevent excessive consumption, which often fuels hooliganism.

Others called for sensitizing referees and officials to uphold fairness and professionalism.

The MPs also expressed the need for the implementation of licensing system for football stadiums to ensure only venues meeting specific security standards are used for official matches.

The MPs collectively emphasized the need for stricter security enforcement, public education on sportsmanship, and accountability from stakeholders to maintain discipline and order in Ghanaian sports.
