In a significant development, First Deputy Speaker of paramount, Hon Bernard Ahiafor has thrown out a private member’s motion filed by the minority caucus, seeking an investigation into the termination of appointments of persons recruited into public service after December 7, 2024.

The motion, filed by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Okaikwei Central MP Patrick Boamah, and Old Tafo MP Vincent Ekow Assafuah, aimed to prompt Parliament to probe the matter, citing inconsistencies with good governance practices and citizens’ rights.

However, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga objected to the motion, pointing out that legal action had already been taken against the termination of appointments.

Hon Ahiafor upheld the objection, ruling that debating the motion could lead to prejudicial comments, given that a lawsuit is pending before the Supreme Court.

According to Hon Ahiafor, permitting the motion and subsequent debates would be a direct violation of Parliament’s standing orders, particularly Standing Order 103 (f).

The Deputy Speaker emphasized that nine reliefs were sought in the lawsuit, challenging the constitutionality of the Chief of Staff’s directive seeking a declaration and prohibition among others.
