Minority MP Alexander Afenyo-Markin has criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for their failure to gather the required numbers for parliamentary business, despite claiming to have a “super-majority” following the 2024 elections.

The Effutu MP challenged the NDC, questioning the absence of several of their Members of Parliament and pointing out that the Majority caucus, which claims to have 187 members, was struggling to meet quorum.

“You claim you are a majority, yet you don’t even have quorum. Count if you even have enough members for proceedings. You don’t have,” Afenyo-Markin said, highlighting the low numbers present on the Majority side.

He went on to express his frustration with the Majority caucus, which has been boasting about their numbers but has been unable to marshal them to the chamber for government business.

In a sarcastic tone, Afenyo-Markin remarked, “Today, you are asking for mercy. We are in Ramadan, so we will grant you no mercy.”

Afenyo-Markin also called on Deputy Majority Chief Whip Richard Acheampong to take responsibility for ensuring that their members attend parliamentary sessions.

“You must bring your members in. Your so-called super-majority. Bring them,” he emphasized.

The Minority MP’s comments highlight growing tensions surrounding the effective functioning of Parliament and the Majority’s ability to maintain a full quorum to conduct business.
