A petition has been filed by Ms. Doris Acharibia, the only female District Chief Executive (DCE) aspirant in the Kassena-Nankana West District, calling for a review of her exclusion from the final list of three nominees following the regional vetting process.

The petition, addressed to the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, demands clarification on the decision to overlook her candidacy in favour of male contenders.

Ms. Acharibia, who has been an active member of the NDC since 1994, is the Branch Communications Officer for the Achorbiisi Electoral Area and has a long history of dedication to the party and to empowering women and children. On January 24, 2025, she participated in the vetting process held in Bolgatanga, representing not only gender diversity but also the values of inclusion, leadership, and empowerment within the NDC.

Despite her years of service and significant experience, Ms. Acharibia’s exclusion from the final list of nominees has raised concerns about the party’s commitment to gender equality and affirmative action. The petitioners argue that this decision undermines the party’s values of fairness, equity, and inclusivity, particularly in a time when there is a strong call for increased representation of women in political leadership.

The petition highlights several key reasons for reconsidering Ms. Acharibia’s candidacy:

Promotion of Gender Inclusion: Ms. Acharibia’s nomination would have served as a powerful example for women and young girls aspiring to participate in politics and governance.

NDC National Chairman, John Aseidu Nketiah

Breaking Political Stereotypes: Her inclusion in the race would challenge the stereotype that women are unable to succeed in politics, reinforcing the NDC’s commitment to an inclusive political environment.

Proven Commitment and Leadership: With 29 years of experience working with women and children, Ms. Acharibia has the leadership capabilities, skills, and vision necessary to drive the development of the district.

Strengthening the NDC’s Grassroots Impact: Her leadership would strengthen the party’s influence at the local level, particularly through initiatives aimed at improving the socio-economic conditions of women, youth, and children in the district.

The petition emphasizes that Ms. Acharibia’s exclusion goes against the core principles of the NDC, which advocates for gender equality and inclusive governance. The signatories are calling for the National Vetting Committee and the party’s leadership to reconsider her candidacy, citing fairness, equity, and merit as the guiding principles for selection.

In a heartfelt appeal, the petition requests that Ms. Acharibia be given a fair hearing and an opportunity to continue her leadership journey. The petitioners believe that her inclusion in the race would not only bring positive change to the Kassena-Nankana West District but would also inspire countless young women across the nation.

The petition has been shared with key NDC leaders, including President Mahama, the National Vetting Committee, the Upper East Regional Vetting Committee, and the Women’s Wing of the NDC. It has also been released to the media, seeking wider attention to ensure that the issue is addressed with the justice and fairness it deserves.

The petition, submitted by Mr. Moses Abana Abiiro, the spokesperson, reflects the growing demand for greater gender representation and the protection of women’s rights in Ghana’s political landscape
