The Member of Parliament for Kintampo North, Hon. Joseph Kwame Kumah, has commended President John Mahama for presenting a pro-poor budget that he believes will help bridge the gap between the rich and the poor in Ghana.

Reacting to the 2025 budget statement delivered by the Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassel Ato Forson, on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, Hon. Kumah described the policies outlined as clear, consistent, and reflective of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) manifesto.

“The budget presents well-defined policies that align with the NDC’s manifesto. President Mahama has simplified governance by ensuring that policies transition seamlessly from manifesto promises to budgetary allocations, making implementation clearer and more efficient,” he stated.

Key Policy Highlights

Hon. Kumah lauded the government’s decision to cancel the Electronic Levy (E-Levy), abolish the COVID-19 levy, provide free sanitary pads for schoolgirls, restore allowances for teacher and nursing trainees, and uncap critical funds such as the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), the Road Fund, and the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

“These measures will free up resources for economic growth. With these policies in place, I see Ghana moving in the right direction. We only pray for favourable weather conditions to support agriculture because food production significantly impacts inflation,” he added.

The MP emphasized the need for swift implementation of irrigation projects to complement rain-fed agriculture, especially in rural areas like his constituency.

Support for Assembly Members’ Allowance

Hon. Kumah also praised the government’s decision to provide allowances for assembly members, describing it as a major step in strengthening local governance.

“I couldn’t contain my excitement when this was announced. Assembly members play a crucial role in their communities. They are the first point of contact for citizens in need, whether during emergencies or other pressing matters. Supporting them financially means empowering local governance at its core,” he said.

High Approval of the Budget

When asked to rate the budget, Hon. Kumah gave it a near-perfect score of 99.9%, describing it as an excellent framework for national development.

The 2025 budget has generated widespread discussions, with many stakeholders analyzing its potential to drive economic transformation. As the government begins its implementation, expectations remain high that these policies will yield tangible benefits for Ghanaians.
