Appointment of COP Yohuno

COP Yohuno’s appointment as IGP by President John Dramani Mahama on Thursday, March 13, 2025, ended the tenure of Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, who was appointed by former President Nana Akufo-Addo in 2021.

Hon. Toobu highlighted a historical pattern in Ghanaian politics, where incoming governments often appoint new IGPs.

He cited instances in 2001, 2009, and 2017 when newly elected Presidents replaced the IGP early in their administration.

However, he expressed confidence in COP Yohuno’s ability to navigate these challenges, citing his successful tenure as Greater Accra Regional Commander, one of Ghana’s most demanding policing jurisdictions.

“The IGP is a political appointee, but his duty is professional policing, not political work. His responsibility is to ensure law and order, crime prevention, and the safety of citizens,” Hon. Toobu stated.

He also emphasized the importance of community policing, urging the new IGP to align policing strategies with the cultural and social dynamics of different regions.

The Role of the IGP in National Security
