Govt Must Prioritize Regular Payments for Waste Management- Zoomlion Demands
The General Manager of the Lavender Hill of Sewerage System, a subsidy of Jospong Group, Lola Asiseh Ashittey, has appealed to the government to ensure timely payments to facilitate the expansion of waste treatment plants nationwide.
This call to action aims to combat cholera outbreaks caused by inadequate waste management.
During a site tour on March 18, 2025, Ashittey highlighted Zoomlion’s impact in Greater Accra, where six waste treatment plants have been established.
“Since we began operations in 2017, cholera has been eliminated in Greater Accra. We urge the government to support our expansion plans to replicate this success nationwide,” she emphasized.
Ashittey also cautioned against the practice of disposing solid waste in liquid waste systems, which hampers treatment processes.
“We find unacceptable items like pads, diapers, and even human bodies clogging our pumps.
This complicates our efforts and delays the construction of additional treatment plants,” she explained.
Meanwhile, Michael Padi Tuwor, Managing Director of the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant, stressed the economic benefits of waste recycling for national development.
“Waste management is crucial for sanitation and the production of essential goods. We must prioritize waste recycling and processing to ensure a cleaner environment and sustain the supply of raw materials,” he stated.
Industry leaders continue to advocate for stronger government support and public cooperation to address Ghana’s waste management challenges and create a cleaner, healthier nation.
