Majority Leader Condemns Military Brutality in Bawku
Bawku Central Member of Parliament and Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, has strongly condemned alleged military brutalities against civilians in the Bawku Municipality on the night of Tuesday, March 18, 2025.
In a statement, Mr. Ayariga described the military’s actions—reportedly involving assaults on women, children, elderly and innocent youth as unacceptable. He vowed to demand full accountability from the military command over the incident.
While expressing regret over the fatal shooting of a military officer by an unknown assailant, the MP insisted that retaliatory attacks on civilians were unjustifiable.
“The rule of law must prevail,” he stated. “Soldiers entrusted with maintaining peace and security should not resort to such actions.”
Mr. Ayariga called for collaboration between the military and local leadership to thoroughly investigate the killing of the soldier instead of resorting to collective punishment.
He extended his condolences to the bereaved family of the slain officer and expressed sympathy for the victims of the alleged military excesses.
He also lamented that his earlier appeal to the military command to exercise restraint was ignored. “We need to work together,” he emphasized.
The Majority Leader expressed confidence in the mediation efforts of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II, to bring lasting peace to Bawku. “I believe all sides will trust in His Majesty’s leadership to resolve the crisis and end the violence,” he added.
