Residents of Kandiga-Kurungu, a community in the Kassena-Nankana West District of the Upper East Region, are calling on the government and philanthropists to address years of neglect and underdevelopment in their area.

Speaking to Bolga FM, the Assembly Member for the Kandiga-Kurungu Electoral Area, Hon. Asaah Adamu Yakubu, highlighted the dire condition of the community’s only basic school.

He described how students are forced to sit on the floor to write exams due to the lack of tables and chairs. He appealed to the Ministry of Education to urgently address the school’s infrastructure deficit.

The Youth Chief of the community, Naba Abillah Dennis, expressed concern over the overcrowding in classrooms, where over 60 to 70 students are crammed into a single room.

Dilapidated school block

He noted that the school’s walls and floors have deep cracks, posing a danger to students. He also emphasized the urgent need for a dam or boreholes to support dry-season farming in the community.

Additionally, an elderly resident, Madam Hellen Abillah, lamented the lack of electricity in the area. She explained that residents travel long distances to charge their mobile phones at a cost of GHC 2.

The absence of electricity also forces women to journey far to access grinding mills and potable water. She appealed to the authorities to provide the community with electricity and safe drinking water.

Dilapidated old structure

A nurse stationed in the community also called on well-meaning Ghanaians to support their CHPS compound with a means of transportation to handle emergency cases and save lives.

The residents are urging the government and relevant stakeholders to intervene and address these pressing development challenges.
