World Water Day: CCLG-Africa Urges Intensified National Fight Against Galamsey
As Ghana joins the rest of the world to mark World Water Day 2025, the Climate Communications and Local Governance -Africa (CCLG-Africa ) has called on the government to intensify efforts in combating illegal mining, popularly known as “galamsey,” which continues to pose a severe threat to the country’s water security.
In a statement issued to commemorate the day, CCLG highlighted the widespread destruction of Ghana’s water bodies due to galamsey activities, warning of the dire consequences for the environment, public health, agriculture, and national security.
While this year’s global theme, “Glacier Preservation,” emphasizes the protection of freshwater sources globally, CCLG noted that Ghana’s most pressing challenge remains the preservation of rivers and other water bodies from galamsey-related pollution and degradation.
“Illegal mining is not only an environmental menace but also a public health hazard and a direct threat to our food systems and economy,” the group stated. “The economic implications are enormous—from loss of revenue and increased environmental remediation costs to reduced agricultural productivity.”
CCLG is urging the government to take bold and immediate action, including declaring a state of emergency on illegal mining, enhancing regulatory frameworks, and investing in enforcement mechanisms. The organization also stressed the need for sustainable alternative livelihoods for those engaged in galamsey.
The group further called for a comprehensive national response involving all key stakeholders—civil society, traditional leaders, the private sector, and local communities. They emphasized that robust public awareness campaigns, community engagement, and environmental education must accompany enforcement efforts.
“As we mark World Water Day 2025, we must recognize galamsey as an existential threat to Ghana’s water resources,” the statement said. “It is time for decisive action to safeguard the environment and ensure water security for current and future generations.”
CCLG reaffirmed its commitment to promoting sustainable environmental practices and called on all Ghanaians to unite in the fight against galamsey to protect the country’s precious water resources.
