Speaker Bagbin and The Press Corps
The Parliamentary Press is an umbrella of the various media houses, both electronic and print, that report from the Parliament. It also includes freelancers of the profession.
The core function of the group is to report accurately on what pertains to the floor of the House.
The Corps is lucky to have Rt Hon Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin as the Speaker of the House.
This is a man who has shown great affection for the media, irrespective of the media house’s orientation.
Since his election as the seventh Speaker of the fourth Republic, he has created an excellent relationship between the Parliament and the Corps. The environment is very conducive for the practicing of the profession without any hindrance.
He has offered an office to the members of the Corps for their comfort to undertake their work without any disturbance.
The Speaker has on many occasions given opportunity to the members to travel with him and other Parliamentary delegations on numerous Parliamentary activities to cover the programs.
In addition, he ensures that members of the Corps benefit from capacity building programs to enhance their skills.
As a senior member of the group, I can confidently state that Rt.Hon Speaker Bagbin has been a pillar of press freedom, press development, press growth and the growth of the practitioners, especially when it comes to the members of the Parliamentary Press Corps.
With this excellent relationship and assistance, the Corps and its members will reciprocate the gesture by adhering to the principles of good journalism practice and help to make our Parliament a five star one on the continent and the sub-region.
