Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Akweley Ocloo, has announced the successful repair of approximately 126 streetlights across various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the region within her first 50 days in office.

The initiative forms part of her earlier pledge to ensure that at least 70 percent of streetlights in the region are operational within the first 50 days of her tenure — a target she says aligns with the government’s broader goal of enhancing visibility and public safety across the capital.

During an assessment tour on Tuesday, March 25, the Minister highlighted key areas that have benefited from the streetlight restoration, including the George Walker Bush Highway, the ACP Junction to Pokuase stretch, Independence Avenue near the Jubilee House, and the New Town Junction to Ashaiman road.

“Today, March 25, marks exactly my 50th day in office, and I am pleased to report that significant progress has been made. In all, about 126 streetlights have been repaired across highways, town roads, and community roads within the 29 MMDAs,” she said.

Ocloo also acknowledged ongoing challenges on major roads such as the Tema Motorway and the Accra-Tema Beach Road, noting that lighting works in these areas could not be carried out due to ongoing construction.

She assured the public that efforts are underway to restore all remaining non-functioning streetlights across the region in the coming weeks.

STATEMENT BY THE HON. REGIONAL MINISTER DURING THE MEDIA BRIEFING ON THE STATUS OF IMPLEMENTATION OF 70% LIGHTING ACCRA ON HER FIRST 50 DAYS ON TUESDAY 25TH MARCH 2025. Ladies and Gentlemen Members of the Press Good evening and thank you for taking time off your busy schedule to be part of today’s briefing as I update you on the status of implementation of lighting Accra. You would recall that, upon assuming office, I made a firm commitment to ensure that about 70% of streetlights in most of the major roads and streets in the region would be fixed and made fully operational within my first 50 days in office as my attention had been drawn to the darkness the city is engulfed in. This initiative is in line with H.E the President’s reset agenda to improve visibility and enhance security. To achieve this target, we engaged all 29 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) and tasked them to identify these streets and highways which needed immediate attention and submit a workplan to fix them. Furthermore, a dedicated monitoring team was established at the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) to oversee the progress and ensure efficiency. Today March 25th, marks exactly 50days in office and I am pleased to report that significant progress has been made. In all, about 126 streets has been worked on, including some highways, town roads and community roads across all the 29 MMDAs in the region. I must mention that the Tema – Motorway and the Accra -Tema Beach Road which is of very much concern to the general public could not be lighted because of the on-going construction works. Additionally, there is maintenance works on streetlights on portions on the N1(Tetteh Quarshie to kasoa), N6 (Achimota to Amasaman) and N4 (shiashie to oyibi) by the Ghana Highways Authority and the contractor is on site with works ongoing. Ladies and Gentlemen At this juncture, suffice me to mention some ceremonial streets or areas where the streets have been lighted; • George Bush Highway
28th February road, Starlet 91 Road • Independence Avenue (Jubilee House Rd.) • Atta Mills Highway-Fire Service Training School • Newtown -Pig Farm Road • Adorgonno Highway • Giffard Road (37 to Trade Fair) • Nima Highway • Weija junction to Oblogo cluster of schools • Afariwa to New Town junction • New Town junction to Ashaiman road • Glory Land junction to Odorkor Official Town junction • Community 18 Road • Jija Junction to race course (Ga Central) • Zongo junction and Abbosey Okai (Ablekuma Central) • Bank of Ghana to Circle Road • Alogboshie street • 1948 Military street • Tetegu junction to Sampah valley • Sege to Kasseh and Sege to Anyamam Roads • Community 5 traffic light to community 7 junction traffic light • Community 7 junction traffic to Tema General Hospital Roundabout • ACP to Pokuase interchange • Westlands to Haatso • Ghanatta Junction to Ghanatta School to Library Road • Hospital junction to Health Research Institute to SODA District Hospital • Prampram Junction to Miotso • Action junction to Atomic junction road • Kpone Barrier to Saki Bediako road and Michel Camp Generally, the implementation has been successful in many areas, with numerous roads and highways now well-lit, improving security and visibility for residents. Members of the Press While the MMDAs were at their wits end and mobilizing resources to achieve the target and performance indicators given them, one challenge was clear. Throughout all the areas there were cases of streetlight cable theft. This theft cases severely hampered progress and is one major reason streetlights are mostly off. I must stress that the incidence of theft poses a major set-back for the sustainability of our streets remaining lighted. I wish to therefore passionately appeal to all citizens to be patriotic and safeguard public infrastructure. Anyone caught stealing these vital components will face severe consequences. We must all be on the look out and say something if we see something. I will ensure that, the Metropolitan, Municipal and District chief Executives who are the Chairpersons for the District Security Communittees, formulate modalities to track these miscreants upon assumption of office. I wish to assure the public of my continued commitment to improve security and visibility in the region. I also want to use this opportunity to thank all stakeholders especially our media partners for the sustained campaign on my pledge to fix 70% of streetlights in the region in my first 50 days. I sincerely express my gratitude to H.E the President and the Vice President for their support. Special commendation goes to the Ministry of Energy for their support in providing us with some streetlights.

HON LINDA OCLOO

To the MMDAs, I wish to commend all of you for the commitment and dedication for the past 50 days. As we set to go out and observe from some principal streets, let’s remember it is the hard work of our MMDAs that our streetlights are functioning. And to the contractors, who have worked hard day and night to ensure our streetlights are on, we are grateful. Ladies and Gentlemen To be able to sustain this progress, we have to begin the conversation among all agencies in the power sector to work on the modalities to release to the MMDAs their share of the 1% charged consumers for streetlights. This would augment the resources of the MMDAs to keep the lights on all the time. I also wish to admonish advertisers who erect signages and posts on our road medians to seek the needed permits and support from the respective MMDAs in order not to disrupt or destroy the underground cables that supply power to the streetlights. Thank you for your attention and I look forward to many more partnership in our quest to develop the Greater Accra Region.
