Suspended Chief Justice of Ghana, Justice Gertrude Araba Torkonoo, has filed a legal injunction challenging the conditions of her ongoing corruption hearing, describing them as inhumane and prejudicial.

The embattled Chief Justice, currently under investigation over allegations of abuse of office and procurement-related misconduct, has objected to the relocation of the proceedings from the Court Complex to the Osu Castle, citing concerns over her mental and physical well-being.

According to her legal team, the move to the historic but heavily secured Osu Castle has subjected her to degrading treatment.

Her lawyers argue that she has been denied access to basic comforts, including communication technology and the presence of close family members, conditions she deems necessary for her proper legal defense and mental stability.

Justice Torkonoo contends that the hearing process violates her constitutional rights and lacks transparency, likening it to a “kangaroo court.”

She maintains that the relocation and the level of security imposed are calculated attempts to intimidate her and tarnish her reputation.

The Chief Justice is requesting that the proceedings be halted until fair and humane conditions are assured.

Among her demands is a more accommodating environment for the hearings—akin to a high-standard facility—where she can be afforded the same rights and dignities as any citizen under investigation.

Despite the controversy, the Committee overseeing the inquiry has yet to officially respond to her allegations.

Meanwhile, leaked documents and ongoing testimonies have intensified public interest in the case, raising broader questions about judicial accountability and due process.

The case continues to generate debate across legal and political circles, as Ghanaians watch closely to see how the judiciary will navigate one of its most high-profile internal investigations in recent history.
