As the world marks Menstrual Hygiene Day 2025 under the theme “Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld,” the Women, Media and Change (WOMEC) organization has called for more aggressive public education campaign to tackle the stigma and silence surrounding menstruation, particularly among young girls.

In a statement signed by Executive Director Dr. Charity Binkah, WOMEC emphasized that menstrual health is a fundamental human right, not a privilege.

The organization lamented that despite increasing awareness efforts, many girls across Ghana and other parts of the world still face discrimination, misinformation, and limited access to menstrual hygiene resources.

“The culture of silence around menstruation continues to prevent girls from attending school, limit women’s participation in public life, and undermine their health and confidence,” the statement said.

WOMEC is calling on media houses, educators, parents, health professionals, and policymakers to join hands in breaking the taboo surrounding menstruation.

The organization believes that media platforms have a critical role to play in challenging harmful myths and normalizing conversations about menstrual health across all sectors of society.

“To achieve a truly period-friendly world, we must invest in education that empowers, empathy that supports, and equity that guarantees access to essential resources such as sanitary products, clean water, and safe facilities,” Dr. Binkah added.

The organization urged a nationwide effort to provide accurate, age-appropriate menstrual education in schools and communities, while also advocating for policy changes that support girls’ and women’s menstrual health needs.

WOMEC reaffirmed its commitment to using storytelling, advocacy, and community engagement to amplify women’s voices and ensure menstrual health is treated not as a peripheral issue but as central to gender equality and social justice.

“As we commemorate Menstrual Hygiene Day, let us stand together, speak up, and take action—for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld,” the statement concluded.
