Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s potential bid to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 presidential elections has received a significant boost, as 220 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) of the party have formally declared their support for his candidacy.

The endorsement followed a stakeholder engagement session between Dr. Bawumia and the former MMDCEs held in Accra on Monday, June 23, 2025.

After the meeting, the group held a press conference where they publicly declared their confidence in the Vice President’s leadership and vision for the party and the country.

In a statement read on behalf of the group, the former MMDCEs said:

“Following extensive consultations with all aspirants, and after a thorough assessment of their vision, competence, and commitment to the NPP’s progress, we are convinced beyond any doubt that Dr. Bawumia is the best candidate to lead the NPP to victory in 2028.”

They emphasized that the endorsement was not just symbolic but rooted in a strategic resolve to help the party succeed, “With 95% of us having previously served as Constituency and Regional Executives—some for over 16 years—we possess an intimate understanding of the NPP’s structures, dynamics, and electoral needs. We will deploy this experience to ensure Dr. Bawumia’s message resonates in every corner of Ghana.”

The former MMDCEs praised Dr. Bawumia as a “man of proven track record in public service,” highlighting his leadership in Ghana’s digital transformation agenda.

“As Vice President, Dr. Bawumia spearheaded transformative policies such as the digitalisation drive, including the Ghana Card, Mobile Money Interoperability, and Paperless Ports. These initiatives have significantly enhanced efficiency and formalised Ghana’s economy,” the statement noted.

They also lauded his analytical and data-driven approach to governance, stating that it ensures policies are “evidence-based and impactful—critical for Ghana’s next phase of development.”

In addition to his policy achievements, the group described Dr. Bawumia as a unifier and a grassroots mobiliser.

“Dr. Bawumia has demonstrated an inclusive leadership style, engaging all factions of the party and fostering unity. His accessibility and humility resonate deeply with grassroots supporters, making him the ideal leader to galvanise the NPP’s base,” the statement added.

This endorsement from the former MMDCEs comes just days after about 65 out of 88 NPP Members of Parliament also publicly threw their support behind the Vice President, signalling growing momentum within the party for his candidacy in the next presidential race.

Dr. Bawumia is yet to officially declare his intentions for the 2028 flagbearership, but the series of endorsements underscores his strong positioning within the NPP for a potential second run.
