The Member of Parliament (MP) for Sunyani West, Hon. Millicent Yeboah Amamkwah, has attributed the increasing level of drug abuse among youth to broken homes and institutional failures.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament in commemoration of World Drug Abuse Day, she emphasized the need for parental responsibility and institutional capacity to guide the youth.

According to her, the lack of parental care and control in single-parent households can contribute to drug abuse among youth.

In addition to that, the MP argued that the Young people are also often swayed by peer pressure, leading to negative behaviors.

In her view the High rate of unemployment also led to depression and increased the likelihood of drug abuse.


Notwithstanding Hon Amamkwah called on parents to take an active role in guiding and mentoring their children.

Communities, she said must also come together to tackle the problem of drug abuse and support those affected.
Hon. Amamkwah urged security agencies to be proactive in addressing the issue and called on traditional leaders to play a role in guiding their communities.

She emphasized the need for collective action to ensure a brighter future for the youth.
