The government has announced plans to recruit 50,000 teachers and 10,000 non-teaching staff in 2025 as part of efforts to strengthen the education sector and address longstanding posting challenges.

Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, made this known on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, while responding to concerns raised by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin regarding allegations of mistreatment of teachers who recently protested at the Ghana Education Service (GES) headquarters.

Dismissing the allegations, the Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring fairness, transparency, and efficiency in the teacher posting process.

He emphasized that the recruitment exercise is fully captured in the 2025 national budget, with adequate funding secured to support its implementation.

“I met with Bafour Eric earlier today and will soon brief the public. He confirmed that financial clearance for recruitment was granted in May, with an initial start date in August, though the process was delayed to September.

Unfortunately, the clearance expired on December 31, and I am currently awaiting its renewal from the Ministry of Finance,” Mr. Iddrisu explained.

He assured Parliament that the recruitment drive remains a top priority for the government, stating, “As I have assured this House, the recruitment of 50,000 teachers and 10,000 support staff is fully backed by the 2025 budget and will be carried out to improve teaching and learning outcomes nationwide.”

The move is expected to significantly ease pressure on the education system, especially in underserved communities, and improve overall quality and access across all levels of basic and secondary education.
