Minority Support Black Queens with GH¢100,000 as Parliament Celebrates WAFCON Bronze Victory

The Minority in Parliament has presented  GH¢100,000 to Ghana’s senior women’s national football team, the Black Queens, in recognition of their outstanding performance at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, where they secured a historic bronze medal.

The announcement was made by the Minority Leader, Hon. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, on the floor of Parliament during a statement delivered by the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Adams, to honour the Black Queens’ achievement.

In his address, Hon. Afenyo-Markin commended the team for their dedication, patriotism, and remarkable display of skill, stating that their success serves as an inspiration to the youth and a source of national pride.

“This donation is a modest gesture from the Minority Caucus to express our appreciation for the pride and hope you bring to Ghana. We must move beyond rhetoric and provide real, tangible support to our female athletes, who often face far greater challenges than their male counterparts,” he emphasized.

The GH¢100,000 contribution is aimed at supporting the team’s logistics, welfare, and preparation for future international competitions.

For his part, Hon. Kofi Adams lauded the Black Queens for their resilience, tactical discipline, and maturity throughout the tournament. He described the team as “history makers” who had elevated Ghana’s reputation on the continental stage.

“Mr. Speaker, I stand here today as a proud Ghanaian to salute the Black Queens for their heroic performance. Today, they sit among us not just as athletes but as national icons who have brought honour and glory to our country,” the Minister remarked.

Some Members of Parliament joined in applauding the Black Queens and called on the Sports Ministry to ensure sustained institutional support, improved training facilities, and equitable financial incentives comparable to those enjoyed by the senior men’s national team, the Black Stars.
