Sirigu Youth Mobilize to Repair Deplorable Kandiga-Sirigu Road, Demand Govt  Action

The youth of Sirigu in the Kassena-Nankana West District have taken matters into their own hands by mobilizing resources and manpower to carry out temporary repairs on the deplorable Kandiga-Sirigu road.

In a show of unity, the  Youth on Sunday, August 31, 2025,  levelled sand and gravel to make the road passable, particularly the stretch leading to the Martyrs of Uganda Health Center.

The road serves as a vital link for surrounding communities, connecting residents to key facilities such as the Sirigu Women’s Organization for Pottery and Art (SWOPA), Sirigu Senior High School, and the health center.

Its poor condition has long-drawn criticism, with residents lamenting the negative impact on transportation, trade, and access to healthcare.

Paramount Chief of the Sirigu Traditional Area, Naba Atogumdeya Roland Akwara III, commended the youth for their initiative but stressed that government intervention was urgently needed.

“Our people are suffering. Farmers struggle to send their produce to market, and patients face delays in reaching the hospital. Government must act and fix this road once and for all,” he appealed.

Historical records indicate that the road project was awarded by the Department of Feeder Roads in 2002, with funds approved, but construction stalled and was subsequently abandoned. Community members say they have since waited in vain for the project to resume.

President of the Sirigu Youth Association, Mathew Abagna, described the exercise as a stopgap measure.

“We cannot sit and watch our community suffer because of bad roads. Today’s effort was only to ease movement for vehicles and people, but government must come in and complete the work,” he said.

The Chief of Gunwoko, Naba Samuel Atingawaaya Anaaya I, also praised the youth’s sense of responsibility, pledging continued support from traditional leaders for community-driven efforts.

Assembly members, opinion leaders, and ordinary residents joined the communal exercise, which turned into a strong demonstration of solidarity and hope for lasting solutions.
