Chief of Staff Calls on Media to Back 24-Hour Economy as Key to Jobs and Growth

Chief of Staff to the Presidency, Julius Debrah, has called on the media to rally behind government’s 24-hour economy initiative, describing it as a game-changer for productivity and job creation.

Speaking at the 75th anniversary cake-cutting ceremony of the Daily Graphic in Accra on Thursday, October 2, 2025, Mr. Debrah congratulated the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL) for its resilience and immense contribution to national development over the years.

He urged the company, and the media at large, to use their platforms to shape public opinion in favour of the policy, which he said has the potential to significantly expand employment opportunities and boost Ghana’s GDP.

“The concept of a 24-hour economy makes sense. It simply means creating the systems and structures needed to boost productivity,” Mr. Debrah said. “If we get it right, it will go a long way to help our nation.”

Addressing concerns raised by Graphic’s management about limited direct state support, the Chief of Staff assured that the matter would be relayed to the President for consideration.

He also commended the Daily Graphic for documenting Ghana’s journey from independence through successive democratic dispensations, describing the newspaper as “a true Ghanaian institution whose legacy is intertwined with the very history of the nation.”

Mr. Debrah reaffirmed government’s commitment to press freedom, pledging continued efforts to safeguard journalist safety, strengthen capacity, and support the media’s digital transition.

“The story of Graphic at 75 holds valuable lessons for all media houses in Ghana; credibility matters. Graphic has earned the trust of generations by staying true to the values of accuracy and integrity,” he noted.

He concluded by urging the media to remain strong partners in national development, while congratulating the staff, management, and board of GCGL for “75 years of truth and service to the nation.”
