NDC Revives ‘Setting the Records Straight’ Campaign to Counter NPP Narrative Ahead of 2028 Polls

The governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially relaunched its “Setting the Records Straight” campaign, describing the initiative as a renewed effort to challenge what it calls propaganda and misinformation being circulated by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra, the NDC’s Deputy National Communications Officer, Godwin Akoo Gun, said the party could not remain silent while what he described as false narratives being promoted to distort Ghana’s political history and misinform the public.

According to him, the NPP had reactivated “its well-known machinery of misinformation, half-baked truths, and calculated propaganda” in a bid to manipulate public opinion and reframe the country’s recent political history in its favour.

“This is not new. It is a deliberate political strategy, one that seeks to exploit silence, manipulate public perception, and rewrite recent history in their favour after what can only be described as a catastrophic record in government,” he stated.

Akoo Gun argued that the NDC had faced similar political attacks since 2004, particularly after the transition from the administration of former President Jerry John Rawlings to the government led by former President John Agyekum Kufuor.

He stated that after the NDC handed over power in 2001, the party’s achievements in infrastructure, economic stabilisation, education and governance reforms were deliberately downplayed through sustained propaganda campaigns.

According to him, the NDC was eventually compelled to launch the original “Setting the Records Straight” platform in 2004 under the party’s communications structure to counter what it believed were distortions of facts surrounding its record in government.

“The relaunch today is both a notice and a warning,” Akoo Gun declared.
“The NDC is not afraid of criticism. In fact, we welcome constructive scrutiny. But we will not tolerate deliberate falsehoods, character assassination, and coordinated propaganda,” he added.

He stressed that the party would aggressively respond to claims it considers misleading by presenting what it describes as factual evidence and documented records.

“Every lie will be confronted with facts. Every distortion will be corrected with evidence,” he said, adding that the NDC remained committed to ensuring that Ghanaians were “informed, not misled.”

Akoo Gun maintained that the initiative was not merely a political communication strategy but a democratic responsibility aimed at protecting public trust and preserving political accountability.

“This is not about politics as usual. This is about protecting the integrity of our democracy,” he stressed.

“We have demonstrated, through policy and performance, our commitment to national development. And we will match that with an equal commitment to truth.”

The “Setting the Records Straight” campaign became one of the NDC’s most recognisable communication platforms during the mid-2000s, particularly as the party sought to defend its legacy after nearly two decades in power under the Rawlings administration.

Over the years, the initiative has been used to challenge public narratives on economic management, infrastructure development, social intervention programmes and governance issues.

The relaunch comes at a time when political parties are intensifying public engagement and sharpening their messaging strategies ahead of the 2028 general elections, with both the NDC and NPP expected to dominate the country’s political landscape once again.
