President John Dramani Mahama has expressed profound grief over the passing of His Royal Majesty Ya-Na Abukari II, describing the late Overlord of Dagbon as a revered traditional ruler whose leadership transformed Dagbon into a beacon of peace, reconciliation and unity.
Speaking at the Presidency in Accra when the Dagbon Traditional Council formally announced the passing of the Ya-Na, President Mahama said the death of the revered monarch is not only a loss to the people of Dagbon but to the entire nation.
“I have lost a father figure, a wise counsellor and a leader whose guidance extended beyond Dagbon to the whole of Ghana,” President Mahama said as he extended his heartfelt condolences to the Royal Family, the chiefs and people of Dagbon, and all Ghanaians mourning the late King’s passing.
The President reflected on his long-standing relationship with Ya-Na Abukari II, recalling their close collaboration during the difficult period of restoring peace to Dagbon.
He praised the late monarch for his unwavering commitment to reconciliation and his determination to unite the kingdom after years of conflict.
According to President Mahama, the late Ya-Na’s reign will be remembered for strengthening traditional governance, promoting dialogue and laying a solid foundation for lasting peace and stability in Dagbon.
“He transformed Dagbon from a period of conflict into a shining example of reconciliation, unity and stability. His legacy will continue to inspire generations,” the President stated.
President Mahama further described Ya-Na Abukari II as a national statesman whose humility, wisdom and dedication to Ghana’s unity earned him admiration and respect across the country.
He assured the Dagbon Traditional Council that the Government would work closely with the kingdom to ensure a befitting burial and provide the necessary state support and honours during the final funeral rites.
The President concluded by praying for the peaceful repose of the late Ya-Na Abukari II and for strength and comfort for the Royal Family, the chiefs and people of Dagbon, as well as the entire nation during this period of mourning.
