The Azuko Traditional Council has officially launched the 2026 edition of the Azuko Annual Festival, setting the stage for the much-anticipated cultural celebration scheduled for December in Sirigu, in the Kassena-Nankana West District of the Upper East Region.
The launch, held at the Azuko-Dana Palace, marked the second edition of the festival, which has quickly become a significant cultural event aimed at promoting unity, preserving the rich heritage of Sirigu, and mobilising stakeholders for the community’s development.
This year’s festival will be celebrated under the theme, “Celebrating Our Heritage Through Peace and Security Stakeholders as Catalysts for Sirigu Development,” highlighting the role of peace, security and cultural preservation in driving sustainable community growth.
Officially unveiling the theme, the Upper East Regional Director of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Mr. Joseph Appiagyei, called for stronger collaboration among traditional authorities, government institutions, development partners, religious organisations, women, the youth and all sons and daughters of Sirigu to accelerate development in the area.
Quoting the African proverb, “One finger cannot pick up a stone,” Mr. Appiagyei stressed that meaningful development can only be achieved through collective effort.
“The development of Sirigu is a shared responsibility. Every stakeholder has a role to play in preserving our heritage while working together to build a peaceful and prosperous community,” he said.
Delivering the keynote address, Brother Valerus Asandoo described the festival theme as both timely and inspiring, noting that cultural heritage should not be viewed merely as a reminder of the past but as a powerful resource for shaping the future.
“Our customs, traditions, language, arts, festivals and values are the pillars upon which our identity stands. Preserving them while promoting peace and unity will provide the foundation for sustainable development,” he stated.
He urged residents to embrace the festival as an opportunity to strengthen social cohesion, promote peaceful coexistence and inspire collective action towards improving livelihoods in Sirigu.
The colourful ceremony attracted traditional rulers, representatives of the District Chief Executive and Member of Parliament, assembly members, development partners, and heads of key institutions, including the Upper East Regional Director of the National Centre for Culture, Mr. Collins Ahmed Edward.
The launch was enlivened by vibrant drumming, dancing and captivating performances by women’s cultural groups, reflecting the unique artistic traditions for which Sirigu is widely renowned.
Beyond celebrating culture, the event also focused on addressing pressing development needs.
The festival steering committee appealed to individuals, organisations and development partners to support the construction of a police station in Sirigu, arguing that improved security is essential to attracting investment, promoting economic activities and safeguarding lives and property.
The Azuko Annual Festival has increasingly become more than a cultural celebration.
It serves as a platform for mobilising the people of Sirigu around a common vision of peace, unity and development while showcasing the community’s rich cultural heritage to visitors and the wider world.
With preparations now underway, expectations are high that the December 2026 celebration will not only strengthen the bonds among the people of Sirigu but also promote tourism, preserve indigenous traditions and inspire renewed commitment to sustainable development across the community.
