Assemblies of God World Congress delegation pays courtesy call on Foreign Affairs Minister

The Assemblies of God World Congress delegation, led by the General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Ghana, Rev. Stephen Wengam, paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, at his Accra office.

Rev. Wengam was accompanied by the General Secretary, Rev. Albert Anane; Rev. Andrews Awintia, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee for the World Congress; and other members of the committee.

Present with the Minister to receive the delegation were the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, James Gyakye Quayson (MP); the Chief Director; Ambassador Khadija Iddrisu; and other senior officials.
Purpose of visit
The purpose of the visit was to officially inform Government about the 10th Triennial Congress of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship, scheduled for 14th to 16th October 2026 in Accra, and to seek the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in hosting this historic event.

Rev. Wengam noted that this is the first time the Congress is being held in Africa, and in Ghana. He stated that the event will bring significant spiritual and economic benefits to the country, especially as it coincides with a time when the sitting President of Ghana is a member of the Church.

He expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama and the Government of Ghana for their support towards the organisation of the Congress. Rev. Wengam appealed to the Ministry to assist international participants through Ghana’s diplomatic missions abroad, particularly with visa acquisition where necessary.

He also informed the Minister that the former President of Malawi, Rev. Dr Lazarus Chakwera, who is a former General Superintendent of Malawi Assemblies of God, will attend the Congress.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs commended the World Assemblies of God Fellowship for choosing Ghana and Africa to host the event.

He acknowledged that Assemblies of God, as the largest Protestant denomination in the world, has contributed immensely to global evangelisation and peace.

He pledged the Government’s full support to ensure the success of the Congress, noting that President Mahama had directed his Ministry to provide all the necessary assistance.

Mr Ablakwa appointed two senior officials of the Ministry to serve on the Local Organising Committee, in addition to a staff member already serving on the Committee.

The General Superintendent presented a Bible as a gift to the Minister, admonishing him to be guided by the Word of God as he leads such an important sector of the country.
