The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources and Acting Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has called for stronger international cooperation, technological innovation and strategic investment to accelerate Africa’s transition to clean and sustainable energy.
Mr Buah made the call while representing President John Dramani Mahama at the opening of the U.S.-Africa Nuclear Energy Summit in Accra.
He said Africa’s growing energy needs required innovative and sustainable solutions, stressing that nuclear energy could play a critical role in strengthening energy security and supporting the continent’s long-term industrialization agenda.
“It was my distinct privilege, as Acting Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, to represent His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama at the opening of the U.S.-Africa Nuclear Energy Summit in Accra,” Mr Buah said.
He emphasised the need for African countries to deepen international partnerships and accelerate the deployment of appropriate technologies while investing strategically in power infrastructure to meet the continent’s development needs.
A key proposal advanced by the minister was the establishment of an African Nuclear Talent and Diaspora Network to connect governments, universities, technical institutions, regulators, industry players and African nuclear professionals across the world.
According to Mr Buah, such a network would help build the human capital and technical expertise required to develop a sustainable nuclear energy ecosystem on the continent.
“I also called for the development of an African Nuclear Talent and Diaspora Network, connecting governments, universities, technical institutions, regulators, industry and African professionals around the world,” he said.
The three-day summit brings together policymakers, industry leaders and nuclear energy experts from Africa, the United States and beyond to explore practical strategies for developing end-to-end nuclear talent pipelines, strengthening regulatory frameworks and deploying advanced civil nuclear technologies across Africa.
Mr Buah said the discussions were particularly important as African countries sought reliable and sustainable energy sources capable of powering industrialisation and expanding economic opportunities.
He reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to pursuing secure and clean energy solutions as part of efforts to promote inclusive economic growth and strengthen national energy security.
“Ghana remains fully committed to harnessing secure, clean energy solutions to drive long-term industrialisation, inclusive economic growth, and lasting energy security for our citizens and the wider African continent,” he stated.
The summit is expected to deepen cooperation among participating countries and institutions while identifying practical pathways for Africa to develop the expertise, regulatory capacity and infrastructure needed to responsibly harness nuclear energy for development.
