{"id":12050,"date":"2023-07-21T19:06:00","date_gmt":"2023-07-21T19:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/expressnewsghana.com\/?p=12050"},"modified":"2023-07-21T19:08:33","modified_gmt":"2023-07-21T19:08:33","slug":"12050","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expressnewsghana.com\/?p=12050","title":{"rendered":"Gov\u2019t pays GH\u00a21.1 billion SSNIT contributions of workers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The government, through the Controller and Accountant General\u2019s Department (CAGD), has settled the principal outstanding debt of GH\u00a21.1 billion owed the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The amount is in respect of contribution receivable from Government of Ghana employees\u2019 First Tier social security contributions owed to the Trust as of 31<sup>st<\/sup> December 2020.<\/p>\n<p>This came to light when the Director-General of SSNIT, Dr. John Ofori-Tenkorang, appeared before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament on July 21, 2023, to answer questions relating to the findings raised by the Auditor-General in its 2021 report.<\/p>\n<p>The outstanding debt of GH\u00a21,124,568,970.17 (principal only) owed by CAGD as of December 2020 has been paid. The penalty of GH\u00a23,209,818,256.22 as of December 2020 has not been paid.<\/p>\n<p>Per Section 64(1) of the National Pensions Act, 2008 (Act 766), the Trust has imposed a penalty of 3 per cent on delayed payments by CAGD over the years to the tune of GH\u00a23,209,818,256.22. Management is in discussions with CAGD and the Ministry of Finance (MoF) to reconcile and settle, Dr. Ofori-Tenkorang noted.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12051\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12051\" style=\"width: 1920px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12051\" src=\"https:\/\/expressnewsghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_20230721_134653_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/expressnewsghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_20230721_134653_1.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/expressnewsghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_20230721_134653_1-600x338.jpg 600w, https:\/\/expressnewsghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_20230721_134653_1-250x141.jpg 250w, https:\/\/expressnewsghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_20230721_134653_1-1000x563.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/expressnewsghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_20230721_134653_1-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/expressnewsghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_20230721_134653_1-1536x864.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12051\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Director-General of SSNIT, Dr. John Ofori-Tenkorang<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Most of the matters noted in the 2021 Auditor-General\u2019s report are follow-ups on legacy issues spanning two decades, which were raised in the previous year\u2019s report.<\/p>\n<p>The Trust has, however, resolved a majority of the issues, and instituted measures and policies to prevent future occurrences.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About SSNIT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT or the Trust) is a statutory public institution charged under the National Pensions Act, 2008 (Act 766 as amended by Act 883) with the administration of Ghana\u2019s Basic National Social Security Scheme.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, the Trust is the largest non-bank financial institution in Ghana. Its mandate is to cater to the First-Tier of the Three-Tier Pension Scheme.<\/p>\n<p>The SSNIT Scheme replaces part of the lost income of Members due to Old Age, Invalidity, or upon the death of a Member, where nominated dependant(s) receive a lump sum payment. It also pays Emigration benefits to non-Ghanaian Members who are leaving Ghana permanently.<\/p>\n<p>The SSNIT Pension Scheme has an active membership of over 1.9 million. In <strong>July 2023<\/strong>, the Trust paid a total of <strong>GH\u00a2369.40 million<\/strong> to some <strong>239,415 pensioners<\/strong>. The highest pension earner receives <strong>GH\u00a2169,725.89<\/strong> per month, while the lowest-earning new pensioner gets <strong>GH\u00a2300.00<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Source:
