The former Director General Technical of the Ghana Police Service, Commissioner of Police (COP) Alex George Mensah, who has been interdicted together with two other Superintendents, would face disciplinary proceedings over their alleged plot in a leaked tape to remove the Inspector General of Police, COP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The trios were interdicted by the police Council Chaired by Vice President, Dr Mahammud Bawumia.<\/p>\n

They are alleged to have engaged in activities contrary to section 17 (b), (d), (j), and (k) of ACT 350, of the Police Services Act 1970, an offence that could attract many penalties including dismissal.<\/p>\n

The \u00a0relevant subsections of section Section 17 read, \u201cIt shall be misconduct for a police officer: (b) to be insubordinate, (d) to engage in any activity outside his official duties which is likely to involve him in political controversy or to lead to his taking improper advantage of his position in the Police Service;, (j) to divulge any confidential information to a person not authorized to receive it; (k) to do any other act without reasonable excuse which amounts to a failure to perform in a proper manner any duty imposed on him as such, or which contravenes any enactment relating to the Police Service, or which is otherwise prejudicial to the efficient conduct of the Police Service or tends to bring the Police Service into disrepute.\u201d<\/p>\n

The interdiction followed COP Mensah, Supt Gyebi and Supt Asare, who appeared before the Parliamentary Committee investigating the scandal and made startling revelations about the police service.<\/p>\n

In a statement signed by the Director General, Administration, COP Christian Tetteh Yohonu, COP Mensah and the two others were informed of their interdiction with immediate effect.<\/p>\n

They were also instructed to hand over his weapons, uniforms, and other police belongings to Depol Logistics.<\/p>\n

\u201cKindly be informed that you are interdicted with immediate effect following your involvement in the leaked tape being investigated by Parliament\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are to hand over your weapons, uniforms and other police accouterments and or properties including your authority badge to DEPOL LOGISTICS\u201d, the wireless statement read.<\/p>\n

During his appearance before the parliamentary committee, COP Mensah who has been lobbying for the post of IGP since 2017, accused Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, of mismanaging the Police Service.<\/p>\n

He claimed that the IGP\u2019s leadership has led to a decline in morale among police officers.<\/p>\n

COP Mensah also admitted to being involved in politics and working in the interest of a political party, although he did not disclose which party it was.<\/p>\n

His comments align with similar sentiments expressed in the leaked tape, where he can be heard saying that the IGP must be removed to ensure the victory of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections.<\/p>\n

However, COP Mensah strongly refuted the authenticity of the tape, claiming that it had been doctored and did not accurately reflect the original conversation with Daniel Bugri Naabu.<\/p>\n

He expressed his inability to verify several details on the tape and stated that there was no plan to remove the IGP.<\/p>\n

Committee Chairman Samuel Atta Akyea challenged COP Mensah\u2019s claims, stating that the tape played during the hearing was not edited. Bugri Naabu, who also testified before the committee, confirmed the authenticity of the tape and admitted to recording it in his private office.<\/p>\n

His claims completely contradict the testimony of Bugri Naabu who confirmed the veracity of the tape and also confirmed recording it in his private office in Osu.<\/p>\n

Bugri Naabu also admitted that COP Mensah wanted him to discuss the possible removal of Dampare from office because he was not likely to help the NPP win the 2024 elections.<\/p>\n

The interdiction of COP Mensah highlights the seriousness of the leaked tape scandal and the ongoing investigations into the alleged plot to remove the IGP.<\/p>\n

The police administration is taking measures to ensure accountability and maintain the integrity of the Ghana Police Service.<\/p>\n
