As part of its humanitarian services to mankind, the Assemblies of God Church, Ghana has announced its commitment to alleviate the plight of flood victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage with GHS20,000 and other relief items.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Church has also called on the government to consider declaring a state of emergency in the affected enclaves, especially communities in and around the lower belt of the Akosombo Dam to save more lives.<\/p>\n

Rev Stephen Wengam, General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God Church, Ghana made the announcement at a press conference in Accra, on Tuesday, October 17, 2023.<\/p>\n

The devastating disaster, the Church said called for a collective effort to mitigate the harm caused to residents living along the spillage way and urged all faith-based organization to join the church in prayers for God’s divine intervention.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a religious organization born in prayer and rooted in the power of prayer, Assemblies of God, Ghana urges other faith-based groups to join in tenacious prayers for divine intervention in the flood disaster.<\/p>\n

<\/em> SOME OF THE FLOODED COMMUNITIES BY SPILLAGE DAM<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

\u201cWe are witnessing a flooding disaster on an epic scale and with devastating consequences in parts of the Volta, Eastern and Greater Accra Regions as a result of the spillage of huge volumes of water from the Akosombo and Kpong dams. It bears recounting that entire communities have been submerged in the flood waters, thousands of people including children have been displaced and property worth millions of Ghana Cedis lost.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo make the desperate humanitarian situation worse, public cemeteries, mortuaries and toilets have also been submerged in the floods- thus polluting sources of drinking water and igniting a public health emergency concern,\u201d Rev. Wengam said.<\/p>\n

While commending the government, security agencies, political parties, and figures for the support of the flood victims, the General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God Church called on Ghanaians to come out and support the victims.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe stark reality is that government and government agencies alone cannot shoulder the huge burden of bringing the requisite relief and hope to the hopeless victims of the untold disaster. This is the time, therefore, for Ghanaians of all social backgrounds, financial standing, political affiliations, and ethnic extractions to rally to the aid of the suffering fathers, mothers and children. Corporate Ghana and other benevolent bodies must also identify themselves with humanitarian efforts while counsellors and psychologists do their bit.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Assemblies of God, Ghana fully backs calls for the declaration of a state of emergency in the flood-affected areas. This will add the necessary legislative and humanitarian weight to measures being undertaken to bring the depressing situation under control,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Rev Wengam again, called on the government and its agencies to find a permanent solution to flooding disaster in the country to save lives and properties.<\/p>\n

He said, \u201cWe believe finding a permanent solution to the impact of flood waters, any time there\u2019s a spillage of water from any of the dams in Ghana will be most welcome. The script has flipped completely regarding the weather pattern, all due to global warming.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe phenomenon of heavy rains, even when least expected, will in turn induce water spillage in order to save the Akosombo and Kpong dams. Engineering solutions, massive education and effective sanctions against environmental degradation should, therefore, be intensified on all fronts if we decide, as a nation, to be serious in finding long-term answers to the flooding and other nagging environmental questions,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
