{"id":14404,"date":"2024-01-09T11:24:12","date_gmt":"2024-01-09T11:24:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/expressnewsghana.com\/?p=14404"},"modified":"2024-01-09T11:24:12","modified_gmt":"2024-01-09T11:24:12","slug":"27-sierra-leone-soldiers-faces-prosecution-over-attempted-coup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expressnewsghana.com\/?p=14404","title":{"rendered":"27 Sierra Leone Soldiers Faces Prosecution over Attempted Coup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>27 Soldiers of the Sierra Leone army have been charged for their role in the foield coup attempt last year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The soldiers faces multiple offences charges for attempting to remove an elected government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe charges include mutiny, failure to suppress mutiny, murder, aiding the enemy, communicating with the enemy and other relevant offences,\u201d the defence ministry said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Last November, gunmen broke into a military armoury and several prisons in Freetown, freeing almost 2,000 inmates.<\/p>\n<p>The authorities described this as an attempt to \u201coverthrow\u201d the government.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, in connection with the same incident, former President Ernest Bai Koroma was charged with treason. He denied any involvement in the events during which about 20 people were killed.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14406\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14406\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14406\" src=\"https:\/\/expressnewsghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Army-Sierra-500x351-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/expressnewsghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Army-Sierra-500x351-1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/expressnewsghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Army-Sierra-500x351-1-250x176.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14406\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em><strong>Sierra Leone Soldiers<\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The authorities are also prosecuting one of Mr Koroma\u2019s former presidential bodyguards alongside 11 former police and correctional officers.<\/p>\n<p>They have been accused of treason, concealing treason and \u201charbouring, aiding and abetting the enemy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Pre-trial proceedings against the 27 soldiers began in a court in the capital, Freetown, on Monday.
