Credible information picked by EXPRESSNEWSGHANA, from the Jubilee House indicates that the Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has voluntarily stepped down as leader.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to our sources at the seat of government, the longest serving lawmaker resigned at a crunch meeting at the Presidency with the President, members of the Majority caucus in parliament and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) national Executive Committee.<\/p>\n

Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, our sourced added, takes immediate effect, thereby created a vacuum for the Majority Leader in Parliament.<\/p>\n

The decision was announced at a critical meeting of the Majority Group on the evening of Wednesday, February 21, 2024.<\/p>\n

The meeting, held at the Jubilee House\u2019s banquet hall in Accra, was convened by President Akufo-Addo.<\/p>\n

It was earlier rumour\u2019s that the crunch meeting is aimed at resolving the growing tension among members of the caucus over the proposed reshuffle of their side of the front bench in Parliament.<\/p>\n

The majority caucus appeared divided, with a faction holding the view that it is time for a change in leadership, while others, argue that the current leadership should be maintained.<\/p>\n

Those in favour of the change argue that Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah- Bonsu will not return to Parliament in 2025, therefore, his deputy, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, should step into his shoes to facilitate a smoother transition in the next government.<\/p>\n

It would be recalled that on February 20, some NPP MPs led by 1st Deputy Speaker, Joseph Osei-Owusu warned that they will not accept any change in their leadership.<\/p>\n

He contended that they are satisfied with the performance the current leadership, led by Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.<\/p>\n

The meeting is therefore expected to agree on the way forward.<\/p>\n

The resignation of Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu may therefore pave the way for a smooth change in leadership of the caucus.<\/p>\n

Going by the current arrangement, Alexander Afenyo-Markin should step in as Majority Leader, pending official communication from the New Patriotic Party (NPP).<\/p>\n
