{"id":17252,"date":"2024-08-15T16:10:05","date_gmt":"2024-08-15T16:10:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/expressnewsghana.com\/?p=17252"},"modified":"2024-08-15T16:10:05","modified_gmt":"2024-08-15T16:10:05","slug":"ndc-wont-sign-peace-declaration-ahead-of-election-asiedu-nketia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expressnewsghana.com\/?p=17252","title":{"rendered":"NDC Won\u2019t Sign Peace Declaration Ahead of Election \u2013 Asiedu Nketia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has announced that the party will not be signing any peace declaration as the country approaches the upcoming elections.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Speaking on Joy News\u2019 PM Express, he expressed doubt about the effectiveness of such agreements, drawing from experiences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSigning a peace declaration doesn\u2019t mean anything to the party, as previous pacts have not yielded any real results,\u201d Asiedu Nketia stated. He emphasized that preventing violence requires proactive measures rather than symbolic gestures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you allow violence to brew, it will happen whether you sign a declaration or not. That\u2019s why, more than a year ago, I started talking about the need to remove the building blocks for a violent election,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>He further criticized the focus on signing peace agreements after tensions have already escalated, urging authorities to address the root causes of potential violence before it spirals out of control.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt any stage when something is happening, I call on those who, in the future, will call us to sign a declaration to speak up and stop it from happening. Otherwise, if you let these issues build up and then say, \u2018Let\u2019s play a peace football match, sign a declaration, and hope for a peaceful election,\u2019 it won\u2019t work. We did all this and more in 2020,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Asiedu Nketia, affectionately known as General Mosquito, pointed out that despite the involvement of bodies like the Council of State and the Peace Council in previous peace declarations, the 2020 election still witnessed violence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSigning or not signing is not the issue. What we need to address are the building blocks that lead to violence,\u201d he insisted.<\/p>\n<p>He also raised concerns about the illegal recruitment of approximately 10,000 individuals into the security services, warning that this could become a source of unrest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s brewing now,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>In the 2020 election, the NDC protested the results, describing them as \u201cflawed\u201d and alleging that state security forces were used to intimidate voters in their strongholds.
