The Majority leader in Parliament, Hon Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has strongly condemned Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Alban S.K. Bagbin, and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus, accusing them of pushing the country toward confusion and lawlessness.<\/strong><\/p>\n

His comments came after the caucus once again boycotted a parliamentary sitting, leading to an abrupt adjournment of the House.<\/p>\n

The majority members refused to sit in the Chamber after the NDC took up seats on the right-hand side of the Speaker, traditionally reserved for the Majority.<\/p>\n

The NDC argues that it is now the majority party in Parliament, following the Speaker\u2019s ruling to vacate the seats of four Members of Parliament (MPs) who had defected to contest the 2024 elections as independents.<\/p>\n

Speaking to the media after the adjournment, a visibly frustrated Afenyo-Markin accused Speaker Bagbin of overseeing what he described as chaos, confusion, and lawlessness, which, according to him, were tarnishing the image of Ghana\u2019s democracy.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is very sad. What Mr. Speaker is doing today amounts to supervising chaos and bringing our democratic reputation into disrepute,\u201d Afenyo-Markin said.<\/p>\n

He called on the media to hold both the Speaker and the NDC accountable for what he called their disruptive behaviour, which he believes is aimed at destabilizing the legislative process.<\/p>\n

The Majority Leader also pointed out that his caucus had not attended a recent Business Committee meeting, explaining that a new committee had not been constituted to call such a meeting.<\/p>\n

“I chair the Business Committee of Parliament, and when the Clerk to Parliament requested a meeting, I was clear that there was no need for another one,” Afenyo-Markin said.<\/p>\n

He also referenced the ongoing tensions between the caucus and Speaker Bagbin over the ruling on the four MPs, which the NPP Majority has contested and taken to the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n

Afenyo-Markin recalled that Speaker Bagbin had assured him, in the presence of the Second Deputy Speaker, that he would wait for the Supreme Court’s ruling, fully aware that the matter was still pending.<\/p>\n

He accused the Speaker of colluding with the NDC caucus to obstruct key government business, including the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.<\/p>\n

He rejected opposition criticisms of the Free SHS program, arguing that it has benefited millions of Ghanaians despite facing challenges.<\/p>\n

He also praised former Education Minister, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempreh and his successor, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum for their commitment to reforming the sector.<\/p>\n

Afenyo-Markin further alleged that the NDC was pursuing a “warpath” agenda aimed at sowing discord and undermining the stability of the nation.<\/p>\n

“Clearly, the NDC is on a warpath. They want confusion and lawlessness in this country, and this is all being supervised by, Mr. Speaker,” he charged.<\/p>\n

He concluded with a warning that if the situation is not addressed, it could have serious consequences for the country’s democracy and stability.<\/p>\n
