Mr Simon Avabey Agianab, the newly elected Dean of the Parliamentary Press Corps (PPC), of Ghana \u00a0has called on key national leaders, including President John Mahama, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, and Chief Justice, to prioritize the welfare of journalists in Ghana.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In his first address following his re-election to a second term of three years on Friday, March 7, 2025, Agianab expressed heartfelt gratitude to PPC members for their overwhelming support. He emphasized that the decision to retain the existing leadership team reflected the trust and confidence placed in the executives.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour decision to retain all the executives demonstrates the confidence you have in us. It also signifies your commitment to continuity,\u201d Agianab said.<\/p>\n

The Dean further reassured members of the PPC that the leadership team remains dedicated to advancing the interests and welfare of journalists who cover parliamentary affairs. He highlighted the pivotal role journalists play in ensuring a thriving democracy, particularly in their watchdog capacity.<\/p>\n

\u201cA vibrant democratic society thrives on the watchdog role of journalists,\u201d Agianab remarked, underscoring the importance of a free, well-supported press.<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Agianab urged President Mahama, Speaker Bagbin, and the Chief Justice to take an active role in improving the working conditions of journalists, ensuring their safety, and providing the necessary resources for effective and accurate reporting.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The PPC, which plays a vital role in covering legislative activities and holding public officials accountable, believes that the welfare of journalists is crucial to upholding press freedom and democracy in Ghana.<\/p>\n

In a closely contested election, new executives for the PPC were also elected. Ekow Skare Anan secured 43 ‘Yes’ votes to retain his position as Deputy Secretary, while Deborah Dzivenu won the Treasurer position with 44 ‘Yes’ votes. Kwaku Sakyi Danso was re-elected as General Secretary with 42 ‘Yes’ votes. Ibrahim Alhassan retained the organizer position, while Stephen Odoi-Larbi triumphed over Ernest Edu.<\/p>\n

The newly elected executives will lead the PPC for the next three years, continuing their work in covering parliamentary affairs and holding public officials accountable.<\/p>\n
