Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, in a Facebook post on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Minister, the decision follows the findings of a special audit team commissioned months ago to investigate reports of corruption within the embassy.<\/p>\n<p>One of the key figures implicated is Mr. Fred Kwarteng, a locally recruited staff member who joined the embassy\u2019s IT department on August 11, 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Investigations revealed that Mr. Kwarteng created an unauthorized link on the embassy\u2019s website, which redirected visa and passport applicants to his private firm, Ghana Travel Consultants (GTC).<\/p>\n<p>Applicants were reportedly charged between US$29.75 and US$60 in unapproved fees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll proceeds were kept in his personal account, bypassing official channels and breaching the Fees and Charges Act,\u201d the Minister stated.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20629\" src=\"https:\/\/expressnewsghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/526202593612-i41p266ffa-ghanaembassybuilding.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"457\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Mr. Kwarteng has admitted to the misconduct, and the matter has been referred to the Attorney-General for possible prosecution and recovery of funds.<\/p>\n<p>As part of sweeping reforms, the Ministry has taken the following immediate actions:<\/p>\n<p>Dismissal of Mr. Fred Kwarteng.<\/p>\n<p>Recall of all Ministry of Foreign Affairs staff posted to the Washington embassy.<\/p>\n<p>Dissolution of the embassy\u2019s IT department.<\/p>\n<p>Suspension of all locally recruited staff at the mission.<\/p>\n<p>Request for the Auditor-General to conduct a forensic audit to assess the full scale of the fraudulent scheme.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20630\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20630\" style=\"width: 2048px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20630\" src=\"https:\/\/expressnewsghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/hon-ablakwah.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1462\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20630\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hon Ablakwah with somestaff of the Embassy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Temporary closure of the embassy for a few days to facilitate a complete systems overhaul and restructuring.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister acknowledged the potential inconvenience to Ghanaians and other applicants seeking consular services during the closure, but emphasized that these &#8220;radical measures&#8221; are necessary to restore integrity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Mahama\u2019s government remains committed to a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption, conflicts of interest, and abuse of office,\u201d Hon.
