Fresh tensions appear to be brewing within the upper ranks of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as reports emerge of a secret meeting allegedly led by the party\u2019s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, to orchestrate a vote of no confidence against the First National Vice Chairman, Mr. Danquah Smith Buttey.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to intelligence gathered, the meeting took place at midnight on Sunday, June 15, 2025, in Accra, with 12 Regional Chairmen in attendance. The meeting, chaired by Mr. Kodua himself, was reportedly convened to persuade the Chairmen to support a plan to remove Chairman Buttey from office.<\/p>\n

Sources close to the party indicate that eight of the Regional Chairmen declined to support the move, describing it as divisive and ill-intentioned. However, four Chairmen\u2014two from the Coastal regions and two from the Middle Belt\u2014are said to have aligned themselves with the alleged plot. One of the four reportedly received personal support from Mr. Kodua during a recent legal ordeal.<\/p>\n

The alleged plan involves accusing Chairman Buttey of making derogatory remarks about the party\u2019s national leadership on a radio programme, where he was quoted as saying that all current executives had failed and should step down. This claim, if confirmed, is expected to form the basis of a no-confidence motion at an upcoming party meeting scheduled for Tuesday, June 17.<\/p>\n

Party insiders believe Mr. Kodua is uncomfortable with the prospect of Mr. Buttey stepping in as Acting National Chairman amid the ill health of current Chairman Stephen Ntim. According to sources, Mr. Kodua previously attempted to downplay the seriousness of Chairman Ntim\u2019s condition, a move that was swiftly countered by a public statement from the Ntim family, cautioning the party against politicizing his health status.<\/p>\n

In what some perceive as a pattern of obstruction, Mr. Kodua is also accused of encouraging a petition from the NPP\u2019s UK branch aimed at suspending Mr. Buttey\u2014an effort that has reportedly failed to gain traction.<\/p>\n

Sources within the party allege that the General Secretary is seeking to consolidate power ahead of internal elections by influencing changes to the party\u2019s electoral album and digital systems. There are further accusations that he has solicited substantial funds in the party\u2019s name without proper accountability, often citing authorization from Chairman Ntim.<\/p>\n

Observers say these alleged actions are contributing to growing unease within the party, especially among grassroots members concerned about transparency, accountability, and the party\u2019s unity heading into the 2024 general elections.<\/p>\n

Chairman Buttey is seen by some as a potential bulwark against what they describe as an overcentralization of power under the current General Secretary, which may explain efforts to remove him from office.<\/p>\n
