The African Initiative for Journalism and Media (AfroMedia) has strongly condemned the systematic targeting and killing of journalists and media professionals in Gaza by the Israeli occupation.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to reports from international organizations, including the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), over 240 journalists and media professionals have been killed in Gaza since October 7, 2023, with many others injured or arrest.<\/p>\n

Condemnation of Violence<\/strong><\/p>\n

AfroMedia described the targeting of journalists as a flagrant violation of international laws and UN charters that ensure protection for civilians and media professionals during armed conflicts<\/p>\n

Call to Action<\/strong><\/p>\n

The initiative called on the United Nations and the international community to take urgent and practical measures.<\/p>\n

Condemn the Targeting of Journalists<\/strong><\/p>\n

Issue an official and immediate condemnation of the assassination and targeting of journalists in Gaza.<\/p>\n

Launch an International Investigation<\/strong><\/p>\n

Conduct an urgent international investigation, including through the International Criminal Court, to hold those responsible for these crimes accountable.<\/p>\n

Grant Access to Independent Media Teams<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ensure that independent international media teams are granted access to the Strip to document what is happening and prevent the monopolization of the media narrative.<\/p>\n

Provide Protection Mechanisms for Journalists<\/strong><\/p>\n

Offer preventive protection mechanisms for journalists, including logistical support and equipment necessary to work in conflict zones.<\/p>\n

Impact on Press Freedom and Right to Knowledge<\/strong><\/p>\n

AfroMedia emphasized that the targeting of journalists is not only a human loss but also a damaging blow to press freedom, transparency, and people’s right to knowledge.<\/p>\n

The initiative stressed that defending journalists means defending truth and justice, and safeguarding their lives is essential to ensuring future generations’ right to know what happened without distortion or concealment.<\/p>\n
