The National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP for Madina, Francis-Xavier Sosu, has been unanimously elected Chairman of the ECOWAS Caucus of the Africa Parliamentary Union (APU).<\/strong><\/p>\n

The election was held on Thursday, November 20, 2025, during a caucus meeting on the sidelines of the 84th Session of the APU Executive Committee and ahead of the 47th Conference of African Parliamentarians in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo.<\/p>\n

Sosu, a renowned human rights lawyer, succeeds Mali\u2019s Alioune Gueye, who led the caucus over the past two years. After serving as Vice-Chairman earlier this year, his elevation is seen as yet another indication of Ghana\u2019s growing influence in regional parliamentary affairs.<\/p>\n

Ghana\u2019s delegation to the meetings was led by Second Deputy Speaker and MP for Fomena, Andrew Asiamah Amoako.<\/p>\n

Other members included Bede Ziedeng (Lawra-Nandom), Sammy Awuku (Akuapem North), John Oti Bless (Nkwanta North), and Shirley Kyei (Atwima Nwabiagya South).<\/p>\n

Before his election, Sosu addressed the APU Executive Committee, urging stronger continental cooperation on youth unemployment, green economic transition, and harmonisation of national laws to drive the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).<\/p>\n

He also renewed his advocacy for abolishing the death penalty, criminalizing witchcraft accusations, especially to protect vulnerable elderly women, and fully operationalising the African Court on Human and Peoples\u2019 Rights.<\/p>\n

Sosu pledged to champion key reforms within the ECOWAS Caucus over the next two years and expressed gratitude to his colleagues for their confidence in his leadership.<\/p>\n
