Dear Nyaaba,<\/strong><\/p>\n

There is a growing and dangerous laziness creeping into our public discourse: the uncritical publishing of every utterance made by certain political actors whose only discernible ideology is trending. They speak not to inform, persuade, or enlighten, but to provoke\u2014knowing that outrage travels faster than reason, and foolishness faster than facts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Editors and producers must begin to exercise far more circumspection. Not every microphone-seeking rant deserves a platform. Not every incendiary quote qualifies as news. And not every politician who shouts is saying something worth hearing.<\/p>\n

We have created a perverse incentive structure. The more reckless the statement, the wider the coverage. The more insulting the language, the higher the engagement metrics. The result? A political ecosystem that rewards attention-seeking over thought, spectacle over substance, and noise over nation-building.<\/p>\n

Consider the now-familiar pattern. A political actor wakes up with no policy proposal, no legislative achievement, and no coherent argument. By noon, they have issued a deliberately outrageous statement\u2014perhaps attacking a judge, demonizing a whole community, or trivializing a serious national issue. By evening, the statement is everywhere: headline news, talk shows, push notifications, and endless social media amplification. The following day, a \u201cclarification\u201d is issued, or none at all. Mission accomplished. They trended.<\/p>\n

What exactly was the public interest served?<\/p>\n

We must be honest: much of this is not journalism; it is stenography for mischief-makers. Publishing such utterances verbatim, without context, interrogation, or restraint, turns newsrooms into megaphones for political vandalism. The excuse that \u201cthe public should decide\u201d is intellectual abdication. Editors are paid precisely to decide\u2014to separate signal from noise, relevance from rubbish.<\/p>\n

Circumspection does not mean censorship. It means judgment. It means asking basic, professional questions before hitting \u201cpublish\u201d:<\/p>\n

\u2022 Does this statement advance public understanding?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Is it grounded in fact or merely designed to inflame?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Is the speaker accountable for their words, or are we enabling a pattern of irresponsibility?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Would this still be news if it were spoken calmly, without insult or provocation?<\/span><\/p>\n

If the honest answer is no, then restraint is not only justified\u2014it is obligatory.<\/p>\n

We have seen the damage already. Public trust erodes when the loudest voices dominate regardless of merit. Serious issues\u2014education, healthcare, jobs, justice\u2014are crowded out by manufactured controversies. Young people learn that politics is not about ideas or service, but about who can shock the hardest and trend the longest.<\/p>\n

Media houses must decide what side of history they are on. Will they continue to reward political clowns simply because clowns draw crowds? Or will they reclaim their role as gatekeepers of reason, context, and public value?<\/p>\n

Silence, in some cases, is not suppression. It is sanitation.<\/p>\n

Let us be blunt: democracy is not strengthened by amplifying every reckless utterance of attention-starved politicians. It is weakened by it. A press that cannot say \u201cthis is not worth publishing\u201d is a press that has surrendered its conscience to clicks.<\/p>\n

Volume is not virtue. Outrage is not insight. And trending is not the same as truth.<\/p>\n

It is time\u2014long overdue\u2014for editors to choose judgment over noise, courage over convenience, and the public good over the poisonous thrill of the moment.<\/p>\n
