Former Deputy National Women\u2019s Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Catherine Deynu, has called for improved working conditions, professional development opportunities, and stronger incentives for nurses across the world as part of activities marking International Nurses Day 2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In a statement commemorating the global observance celebrated annually on May 12, Dr Deynu paid glowing tribute to nurses for what she described as their \u201ccolossal contribution\u201d to healthcare systems and humanity.<\/p>\n

International Nurses Day is observed every year on May 12 to honour the dedication, sacrifices, and invaluable service of nurses worldwide.<\/p>\n

The day also marks the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, widely regarded as the founder of modern nursing.<\/p>\n

The 2026 theme for the celebration is \u201cOur Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives,\u201d according to the International Council of Nurses.<\/p>\n

Dr Deynu noted that nurses remain the backbone of healthcare delivery, serving humanity from childhood through old age in hospitals, clinics, schools, communities, and homes.<\/p>\n

\u201cNurses provide not only medical care but also emotional support, comfort, and hope to patients and families during difficult moments,\u201d she stated.<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

She observed that despite the difficult and emotionally exhausting conditions many nurses endure, especially in developing countries, they continue to demonstrate commitment, compassion, and professionalism in caring for patients.<\/p>\n

According to her, International Nurses Day serves as a reminder that nurses deserve the very best in society, including improved remuneration, better working environments, incentives, and opportunities for career advancement.<\/p>\n

Dr Deynu praised the enduring legacy of Florence Nightingale, saying her contributions to nursing continue to inspire generations of nurses around the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe championed patient care beyond medication and monitoring, providing both ethical and clinical guidance that still shapes modern nursing today,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

She further described nurses as advocates for the vulnerable, educators, counsellors, innovators, and comforters who stand with patients during moments of fear, uncertainty, and crisis.<\/p>\n

Reflecting on the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr Deynu acknowledged the sacrifices made by nurses globally, saying the pandemic exposed the critical importance of the nursing profession.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe bravery and sacrifices of nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic earned them global admiration as they risked their lives daily to save others,\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n

She concluded by expressing appreciation to nurses worldwide for their dedication and humanity.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you for your care. Thank you for your sacrifice. Thank you for your healing hands and compassionate hearts. Indeed, you are the heartbeat of healthcare,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
