The Member of Parliament for Krachi West, Hon Helen Adjoa \u00a0Ntoso has called on the government to consider providing mechanized boreholes in the constituency to reduce the acute shortage of drinking water supply in the area.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

She decried months if not years of water scarcity in the constituency and urged the government to take appropriate measures to provide drinking water in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The water scarcity, she said affected several communities within the Krachi West municipality, adding that the situation has exposed them to untold hardship in sourcing potable water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hon Helen Ntoso made the call when she dragged the Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources to parliament to answer the question on the plans the government have to end the acute water problem in the constituency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMr. Speaker, I rise to ask the Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources whether the Ministry has any plans to tap water from the Volta Lake to give the people of Krachi\u00a0 West regular flow of water?,\u201d she questioned the sector Minister, Cecilia Abena Dapaah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, she said most families relied on untreated water sources thereby making life unbearable and expressed the view that mechanized boreholes would reduce the situation in the constituency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In response, the Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Hon Cecilia Abena Dapaah said the Krachi West Municipality benefited from boreholes fitted with motorized pumps during the resettlement period of the construction of the Akosombo Dam, that supply water to concrete tanks with a storage capacity of about 460m3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Minister, the water system became dysfunctional and in 2003, the government together with GTZ\/KfW , intervened through the Eastern and Volta Region Assistance Project (EVORAP)\u00a0 to provide some boreholes which mechanized to deliver water into a 12m high elevated 180m3 reinforced concrete reservoir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMr. Speaker, to improve potable water delivery in the municipality, the Community Water and Sanitation Agency carried out an assessment of the water system in March 2018. Taking into consideration the extent of deterioration and the water supply challenges to a large population, the CWSA intervened in March 2019 and undertook rehabilitation works to the tune of about GHS330, 000.00 to improve water delivery,\u201d Hon Cecilia Dapaah said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, the Minister explained that the Water System supplies potable water at 29 standpipes and 642 private connections, whereas taking into consideration the safe yields of the boreholes and the capacity of the installed pumps, the water system can produce 582.4 m3 daily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hon Cecilia Dapaah added that the total daily production has the ability to meet the daily water demand of the Kete Krachi community at the present estimated demand of 554.92 m3, a day, but expressed concern about the challenges following the incessant power supply interruption from the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCO).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She however assured of the government’s commitment to providing water to every community including the Krachi West Community, stating that, the Ministry through the CWSA is in discussion with a number of agencies including the Grundfos Ghana Limited, to develop a Public Private Partnership Agreement for the development of a surface water supply system drawing raw water from the Volta Lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the meantime, the Minister added that the Krachi Community and its environs would be supplied with potable water from the Volta Lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
