{"id":7701,"date":"2022-08-17T23:01:02","date_gmt":"2022-08-17T23:01:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/expressnewsghana.com\/?p=7701"},"modified":"2022-08-17T23:03:16","modified_gmt":"2022-08-17T23:03:16","slug":"british-billionaire-sir-jim-ratcliffe-wants-to-buy-manchester-united","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expressnewsghana.com\/?p=7701","title":{"rendered":"British Billionaire: Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants to buy Manchester United"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>News of the 69-year-old&#8217;s interest follows a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-08-17\/glazers-said-open-to-sale-of-minority-manchester-united-stake\">Bloomberg report<\/a> that the Glazer family is willing to sell a minority stake in the club.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If the club is for sale, Jim is a potential buyer,&#8221; Ratcliffe&#8217;s spokesperson told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/ineoss-billionaire-owner-sir-jim-ratcliffe-i-want-to-buy-manchester-united-bjqk2bfrx\"><strong>The Times<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If something like this was possible, we would be interested in talking with a view to long-term ownership.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>United, 20-time English champions, are bottom of the Premier League after losing both their opening games of the season under new manager Erik ten Hag.<\/p>\n<p>The woeful start has intensified criticism of the Glazers and their perceived lack of investment in the team.<\/p>\n<p>This summer has seen new signings fail to materialize, including a fruitless pursuit of Barcelona&#8217;s Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong, while superstar striker Cristiano Ronaldo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/football\/62559698\"><strong>could leave Old Trafford<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The club has struggled since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 and has not won a trophy since 2017.<\/p>\n<p>There have been multiple protests against the Glazers&#8217; ownership in recent years, including one in May 2021 which caused the Red Devils&#8217; home league match against Liverpool to be postponed.<\/p>\n<p>United fans are planning another protest against the American family during their latest meeting with their Anfield rivals on Monday at Old Trafford.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/football\/62573665\"><strong>Ronaldo will soon reveal &#8216;the truth about his future<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/football\/62536761\"><strong>&#8216;A joke&#8217;, &#8216;bullied&#8217; &amp; &#8216;rotten&#8217; &#8211; is Man Utd at rock bottom?<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Lancashire-born Ratcliffe, the majority shareholder of chemical group Ineos, is a boyhood fan of the club. He also owns French side Nice, Swiss club Lausanne-Sport, and Ineos Grenadiers cycling team, while Ineos has a partnership with the Mercedes F1 team.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is not about the money that has been spent or not spent,&#8221; the spokesperson added. &#8220;Jim is looking at what can be done now and, knowing how important the club is to the city, it feels like the time is right for a reset.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Earlier on Wednesday, Elon Musk, the world&#8217;s richest man,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/football\/62573069\"><strong>said he was joking<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0after tweeting he was going to buy United.<\/p>\n<p>Musk, 51, is reported to have a net worth of $270bn (\u00a3223bn) according to Forbes, while Ratcliffe is worth an estimated $16.3bn (\u00a313.5bn).<\/p>\n<p>In May, Ratcliffe\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/football\/61320812\"><strong>made an unsuccessful \u00a34.25bn offer<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0to buy Chelsea after owner Roman Abramovich put the London club up for sale.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, Ratcliffe told BBC Sport he was still a Manchester United fan and the reason he was not bidding for the
