Madam Kristalina Ivanova Georgieva-Kinova, the\u00a0 Chair and Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), has assured Ghana her outfit side is on standby to assist Ghana to put the country\u2019s economy on a better footing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Bulgarian economist made this known in a tweet on Friday, August 26, 2022.<\/p>\n

According to her, the IMF\u2019s decision to support Ghana stems from a \u2018constructive meeting\u2019 she had with Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta and his team.<\/p>\n

The meeting, she disclosed bordered on the challenges of Ghana\u2019s economy and how to address them.<\/p>\n

\u201cConstructive meeting with [Ghana\u2019s] Finance Minister Ofori-Atta & his team on Ghana\u2019s economic challenges and the way forward.<\/p>\n

We are ready to do our part to help the authorities stabilize the economy, lay the ground for more robust growth & help the most vulnerable\u201d, the tweet said.<\/p>\n

The assurances from the IMF Chair come when the country\u2019s economic outlook appears to be in distress.<\/p>\n

Currently, Ghana\u2019s currency, the Ghana Cedi, is consistently depreciating against the US dollar at a fast rate which many citizens are lamenting about.<\/p>\n

Inflation is also on the rise with the cost of living also high.<\/p>\n

These factors were amongst a list of considerations that compelled Ghana to seek assistance from the IMF on July 1, 2022.<\/p>\n

In a statement by the Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the move to go to the IMF is to help the global lender assist the government in implementing some economic recovery prorgammes.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), and other civil society organisations have criticized Ghana\u2019s request for an IMF bailout, describing it as an imprudent measure.<\/p>\n

According to the critics, the country\u2019s economic woes are based on the failure of the government to deal with its internal mismanagement and corruption, and thus support from the IMF will amount to nothing.<\/p>\n

However, sources within the government indicated that the assistant assistance from the IMF will come in 2023.<\/p>\n
