{"id":7983,"date":"2022-08-29T18:22:13","date_gmt":"2022-08-29T18:22:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/expressnewsghana.com\/?p=7983"},"modified":"2022-08-30T12:55:59","modified_gmt":"2022-08-30T12:55:59","slug":"nigeria-high-court-turns-down-extradition-request-for-cop-to-usa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expressnewsghana.com\/?p=7983","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria High Court turns down Extradition Request for Cop to USA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A Nigerian court has rejected a request to extradite a suspended police officer to the United States after he was implicated by a social media celebrity in a fraud case.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Deputy police commissioner Abba Kyari was suspended after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2022\/3\/4\/nigeria-approves-us-extradition-of-top-cop-linked-to-1-1m-fraud\">he was implicated<\/a>\u00a0in the case of Nigerian social media influencer Ramon Abbas, known as Hushpuppi, who pleaded guilty to money laundering and other crimes in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, a federal court sitting in Abuja dismissed an extradition request filed by Nigeria\u2019s Attorney-General Abubakar Malami after\u00a0Kyari\u2019s indictment in the US.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Inyang Ekwo dismissed the application on Monday, calling it \u201cstrange, incompetent and bereft of merit\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Ekwo said that as the country\u2019s chief law officer, Malami \u201cought to be aware that the Extradition Act forbids the surrendering of a defendant that is already facing trial before a competent court in the country\u201d. Kyari has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-7984\" src=\"https:\/\/expressnewsghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Federal-High-Court-Lagos_large-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"nigeria high court \" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/expressnewsghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Federal-High-Court-Lagos_large-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/expressnewsghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Federal-High-Court-Lagos_large-600x379.jpg 600w, https:\/\/expressnewsghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Federal-High-Court-Lagos_large-768x485.jpg 768w, https:\/\/expressnewsghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Federal-High-Court-Lagos_large.jpg 848w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But in February, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), arrested him for cocaine smuggling and belonging to an international drug syndicate. So he is standing trial in Nigeria for an alleged link with drug barons.<\/p>\n<p>The FBI said last year that Hushpuppi\u2019s crimes cost his victims almost $24m in total.<\/p>\n<p>According to the FBI, citing court documents, Hushpuppi confessed to paying Kyari a bribe for the arrest of a former associate.<\/p>\n<p>Kyari has denied the charges.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>SOURCE:\u00a0AL
