{"id":8559,"date":"2022-09-29T20:44:39","date_gmt":"2022-09-29T20:44:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/expressnewsghana.com\/?p=8559"},"modified":"2022-09-29T20:44:39","modified_gmt":"2022-09-29T20:44:39","slug":"over-200000-people-risk-of-starvation-in-somalia-as-drought-ravages-un","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expressnewsghana.com\/?p=8559","title":{"rendered":"Over 200,000 people risk of starvation in Somalia as drought ravages \u2013 UN"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Somalia is facing a \u201cvery alarming\u201d situation after more than four years of drought have devastated livestock many people depend upon, a top UN official said on Tuesday.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The United Nations has warned that the Horn of Africa nation is on the brink of famine for the second time in just over a decade, with 200,000 people in danger of starvation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe situation currently in Somalia is very alarming,\u201d Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Africa regional representative Abebe Haile-Gabriel told AFP on a visit to Nigeria\u2019s capital Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe situation in Somalia like I said has been very dire. There has been a drought for more than four years in a row and this has a divesting impact on the livelihood of the people of Somalia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many were likely already starving to death in Somalia, the WHO has said, warning that humanitarian workers could not keep up with the surging needs.<\/p>\n<p>The FAO official, an Ethiopian and former Africa Union agriculture director, also said efforts had been made to provide aid to farmers in Ethiopia\u2019s Tigray region, where rebels are again fighting against government forces.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere have been some efforts to provide assistance. FAO has been in collaborations with some donor agencies, to procure some fertilisers and make them available to farmers in the affected region,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8560\" src=\"https:\/\/expressnewsghana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/AFRICA.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not a sustainable solution.
